With wedding season approaching, college students are leaning toward engagement ring trends that spotlight affordability.

Megan Dale, a recently engaged young adult, said her fiance took the lead in choosing her wedding ring. Selecting a budget-friendly approach, they successfully secured the ring of her dreams. Dale and her fiance chose a 2.85-carat moissanite diamond ring.

According to Dale, moissanite diamonds and natural diamonds are so similar it’s hard to spot the difference.

“I can’t even tell the difference. If he hadn’t told me, I would’ve never guessed,” she said.

Dale gave her highest recommendations for moissanite stones, especially to those trying to get engagement rings on a budget.

Forge Jewelry is a Provo-based jeweler. Owner and CEO Rischelle Mikkelson shared the following top engagement ring trends for 2024:

  • Large center stone solitaires, particularly with oval and emerald cuts.
  • The snowdrift design, featuring smaller side stones for an organic aesthetic.
  • Toi et moi design, showcasing two similar-sized center stones side-by-side. Additionally, 14-karat yellow gold slightly edges out white and rose gold preferences.
  • Wide bands.
  • East-West center stone settings, which tilt the main

The evolution of engagements and rings as symbols of commitment

Winter will be here soon, and that means peak wedding season is almost over.

But wedding planners say they’re already planning for another busy year in 2024, so it got us thinking, why do we wear wedding rings?

“If you like it, then you should put a ring on it.” We all know the words of Beyoncé.

But where did this tradition come from?

Contrary to what your newly engaged friend might want you to think, they did not invent the wedding ring.

Like a lot of old traditions, the exact history of wedding rings is murky. But one belief dates back to ancient Egypt.

Egyptian pharaohs believed rings symbolized eternity because of their circular shape, with no beginning and no end.

Egyptians also believed in the “vena amoris,” or “vein of love.” They thought there was a vein in the fourth finger on the left hand connected directly to the heart. That’s why it’s still common to wear a wedding ring on that finger.

When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, the Greeks adopted the tradition of gifting a ring to show devotion. The tradition carried on when the Romans conquered the Greeks.

More men are wearing engagement rings. The market is figuring it out.

Tobias Kormind, managing director of London-based online diamond retailer 77 Diamonds, says the demand for men’s engagement rings was close to zero until about seven years ago. Today, he estimates they account for as many as one in 30 custom orders from men looking for gem-set rings with diamonds or precious stones. “It’s still not a core product,” he says, “but it definitely seems to be growing”.

Experts from jewellery retailers say gay men were some of the first customers seeking out engagement rings for men. “Gay couples have been really trying to define their own engagements and weddings and find ways to express their commitment to each other,” says Joshua Sherman, director of marketing at Grown Brilliance, which focuses on lab-grown diamonds.

However, the trend has rippled out. Some high-profile celebrities including Ed Sheeran, Ryan Reynolds, Brooklyn Beckham and Michael Bublé have gone on to mark their own engagements with a ring, sometimes wearing them with a wedding band after marriage.

In part, alongside a booming market for inclusive and gender-neutral fashion, more men are embracing jewellery in general. At Eternate, men’s jewellery comprised 7.2% of all sales in 2021, says Telaferli. Today, that figure is closer to 15%.

Widower’s heartbreak as his late wife’s wedding and engagement rings were stolen by thieves months after mother-of-two, 43, died of brain cancer

A recently widowed father has appealed for the return of his and his wife’s wedding and engagement rings after they were stolen in a burglary.

Craig Easterbrook’s wife, Gemma, died in November aged just 43 after a long battle with brain cancer.

The rings, in the care of her sister, Amy Kingswell, were to be handed over to the couple’s children, Florence, 11, and Arthur, nine, when they were older.

But the three precious heirlooms were stolen during the break-in at Ms Kingswell’s house in Norwich earlier this month.

Mr Easterbrook, from Mulbarton, Norfolk, told MailOnline the rings together were worth less than £1,500 but said the sentimental value was immeasurable.

He said: ‘For Gemma, when she was ill and had to have surgery during Covid, the ring was what she held onto
