De Beers London now showcases cabochon-cut diamonds within its High Jewellery range for the first time, turning away from traditional multi-faceted cuts that prioritize sparkle and a softer glow.

A New Diamond Cut Technique

The cabochon-cut diamonds debut in the Undulation suite of the Vibrations High Jewellery collection, inspired by water droplets along a riverbank. These softly rounded stones feature smooth, domed profiles that create a subtle interplay of light rather than the conventional sparkle of brilliant cuts.

Developing this technique required five years of innovation, as the cabochon cut presents significant challenges when applied to diamonds. Unlike coloured gemstones, diamonds’ hardness and the need for precision make achieving a flawless finish without facets exceptionally difficult. The process demands meticulous attention to each stone’s natural characteristics, as the absence of facets exposes inclusions and imperfections.

According to the company, fewer than 0.5% of diamonds meet the strict colour and clarity criteria for this cut, with additional requirements for crystal structure, symmetry, and overall quality further narrowing the already rare selection.

Vibrations Collection: Water as Inspiration

The Vibrations collection draws from the enduring power and changing forms of inland water across Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Canada. Within this universe, the Undulation suite specifically evokes Botswana’s Okavango Delta, featuring fluid silhouettes, rare rough green diamonds, and the new cabochon-cut stones.

The rounded diamonds contrast sharply with traditional brilliant-cut stones, introducing a softer visual language to the designs. Their understated luminosity adds depth and sculptural character, while the rough green diamonds contribute an organic element reflecting the Delta’s vegetation diversity.

The collection includes additional suites: Echo, inspired by Namibia’s Fish River Canyon; Cascade, influenced by South Africa’s Tugela Falls; and Shimmer, capturing Arctic frost flowers in Canada’s Ellesmere Island. These pieces translate water’s changing moods into jewellery, connecting diamond origins with the environments that inspire their transformation.

Challenging Traditional Notions of Beauty

The introduction of cabochon-cut diamonds represents more than experimentation—it reflects a creative ambition to explore diamonds’ character and natural beauty through unconventional forms. By softening how light interacts with the gemstone, De Beers London offers an understated aesthetic that emphasizes form, texture, and craftsmanship equally.

This approach challenges the traditional view that a diamond’s beauty must be defined by brilliance alone. The result is a distinctive addition to High Jewellery, where technical innovation meets appreciation for the natural world. With Vibrations, De Beers London demonstrates that diamond artistry’s future need not rely on familiar expressions of brilliance, sometimes, a quieter glow makes an equally compelling statement.
