Solomon Brothers announced on Monday that it has acquired Mervis Diamond Importers, thereby adding three Washington-area showrooms to its portfolio and signaling a strategic move into the Mid-Atlantic region.

Acquisition details

The buyer will keep the seller’s stores in Tysons, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and Rockville, Maryland, ensuring that each location continues to serve its existing clientele. Operations will stay under the same name, preserving brand recognition for longtime customers.

Brother Zed confirmed he will continue leading diamond buying for the combined firm, bringing his long-standing expertise to the expanded buying team.

President Jaron Solomon emphasized that the legacy of the brand will be preserved, not replaced, and that the partnership aims to honor the reputation built over decades.

Plans for growth

The acquisition brings the total to six showrooms: three in Georgia under the buyer’s brand and three in the D.C. region under the seller’s banner, creating a balanced footprint across two distinct markets.

The firm plans to invest in inventory access, diamond sourcing, e-commerce tools, marketing analytics, and technology support that single-market retailers often lack. They intend to allocate capital toward modernizing point-of-sale systems and enhancing online visibility.

Customers can expect a broader selection of diamonds, bridal pieces, and designer jewelry thanks to the shared buying power of the two companies. This expanded assortment is expected to cater to a wider range of taste and budget preferences.

For shoppers, this means more choices without losing the familiar service they trust. The combined staff will continue to offer personalized guidance, a hallmark of both families’ retail philosophy.

Historical roots

Both families trace their origins to South Africa. Zed Mervis and founder Ivan Solomon immigrated to the United States and later started independent businesses that grew into regional jewelers.

In 1981, the Mervis brothers began importing South African diamonds and opened a retail outlet in Rockville, establishing a foothold in the Washington metropolitan area.

Ivan Solomon opened his first Atlanta store in 1982, eventually expanding to three locations in the region and creating a recognizable presence in the Southeast market.
